Tamara Afifi (Chair of Communication) was awarded the Mark Knapp Award for a Distinguished Career in Interpersonal Communication Research by the National Communication Association.
Erika Arenas (Sociology) received the Peer Winter 2024 award.
Javiera Barandiaran (Global Studies) was invited by the Rockefeller Foundation to be a Bellagio Center resident in 2024, to work on her book on lithium, resource nationalism and climate change in Chile and the U.S.
Charmaine Chua (Global Studies) was named a 2023 Freedom Scholar by the Marguerite Casey Foundation in recognition of movement leaders who participate in academia with a demonstrated commitment to supporting social movements. Chua was also named the AY 2023-2024 recipient of the Harold J. Plous Memorial Award.
Olivier Deschenes (Economics) won the Hicks-Tinbergen Medal for his paper coauthored with Stephen Jarvis and Akshaya Jha The Private and External Costs of Germany's Nuclear Phase-Out.
Waverly Duck (Sociology) was awarded the Visiting Scholar Fellowship by the Russell Sage Foundation.
Howie Giles (Communication, with Jane Giles and former UCSB Students Jessica Gasiorek and Sharde Davis) was awarded the 2023 Communication and Aging Outstanding Book Award by the National Communication Association for their book: Giles, H., Gasiorek, J., Davis, S., & Giles, J. Vladimir Hamed-Troyansky (Global Studies) received an External Faculty Fellowship from the 2023–24 Stanford Humanities Center. He also won a fellowship from the American Research Institute in Turkey Research.
Dana Kornberg (Sociology) received an American Council Of Learned Societies (ACLS) Fellowship for “The Garbage Economy: Pursuing Money and Scrap in Urban India’s Casted Institutions.”
Dan Lane (Communication) was awarded a 2023-2024 Regents’ Junior Faculty Fellowship for his research project on “Mapping Global Digital Political Inequality.”
Sarah McClure (Anthropology) was featured as part of a nationally televised documentary on Radiotelevisión Española (RTVE) for her research, funded by the National Geographic, on the Neolithic at Krivace and dairying in Croatia.

Joe Walther (Communication) received the Frederick Williams Prize by the Communication and Technology Division at the 2023 International Communication Association Conference in Toronto. Walther was also invited as a visiting scholar at Harvard University in the Fall, working at the Berkman Klein Center’s Institute for Rebooting Social Media.
