UCSB Students Start Free Tutoring Program for Local Children

In 2023, Jessica Lickstein, a third-year sociology major at UCSB, started Education+, an organization composed of fellow UCSB students that offers free virtual tutoring for students in grades K-8. Education+ was born out of Lickstein's experience volunteering in a kindergarten classroom and witnessing first-hand the education disparities between children from low-income families and children from moderate- or high-income families. What once started as a class project, has now flourished into an organization with roughly 50 tutors who work one-on-one with children every week.

Education+ is in the process of becoming an official club at UCSB, and in the longterm, Lickstein hopes the program can expand nationwide to tackle systemic inequities in the U.S. education system.

Parents may sign up here to select a time for a free hour of tutoring and select what subject their child needs help in. In January, Education+ will also restart their free Spanish and coding programs to teach children the basics of Spanish and coding.
